photographer marc steinmetz collects images of home-made prison-escape devices it is the night of the oscars. it seems a bit strange as i am not so keen on the movie as an entertainment medium- as my friends would know that it takes much determination on their parts to bring me to a movie. but since i somewhat missed a gigantic amount of television (funny enough, i really wanted to watch some tv while i was over in europe, especially during the 2010 olympic ceremonies, but trying to watch non-english coverage in uk was almost impossible as all those things were heavily copyrighted), i suppose this is a good way to make up for it. i dont even know the half of the movies on the list. though i can recall a few of them being a real entertainment, and often education as well. it made me laugh to listen to the contenders for the documentaries, as i have seen all that has been nominated (unlike the best film categories, where i feel somewhat clueless). that is what i usually rely on the m...

i have to confess that my least preferred medium of general culture is movies. i wouldnt say that i hate it, but i tend to dislike most of them- well, a lot of them. wait... i cant say 'dislike mosts' because well, just because i really do not go see a whole lot of movies. therefore, when i take that particulr point into a consideration, i cannot say i dislike, but perhaps the correct way to say it may be something close to 'indifferent/unenthusiastic toward movies.' recently monkey was hanging out with bunch of friends and acquintences. for some unknown reason, this particular crowd veered toward movies: quotations. the usual likes/dislikes. peanut gallery comments on directors/movies. associated rituals and such. funny enough, i found that i had more things to say than expected for someone who have appointed self as not-a-movie-person. in fact, in one of the longer discussions, i ended up drawing a big laughter with a oxymoronic comment: i dont like movies ->...

i am notorious for not wanting to watch a movie. movie and tvs, for some unknown reason, i always try to avoid being involved with those two particular mediums. i cant quiet figure it out but i think it may have to do with the fact that once one sits down on that theater chair, one must (though there is hardly any enforcer really) sit down to the end of it and 'enjoy' it (or something). or is it the fact that both mediums try to offer (big question mark on 'try') a comprehensive package of something- while sorely lacking most of the 'real' experiences it tries to portray (for instance, there's no 'smell' in a movie. impossible, yet, sense of smell is one of the most powerful sensory experiences of all). also the fact that majority of the sensory stimulation from such mediums (aural, visual) tend to create an invisible cage for one's own imagination. well, i think that's why people frequently complain about the crap translation of a book to a...
